Caring for your Shofar
- To remove odours
- Block mouth piece with tissue paper or a cork.
- Turn into a vertical position.
- Pour a mixture of Bicarbonate Soda into Horn opening , fill to top.
- Soak overnight.
- Rinse.
- Allow to dry in a inverted position over a peg or thin pole.
- Can also utilize a solution of Borax.
- Exterior Horn Surface
- Wipe down with a damp fibre cloth,
- Allow to dry, not in direct sunlight.
- Cleaning the Mouth Piece
- Utilise an earbud or a pipe cleaner dipped in Hydrogen Peroxide , do not force it in, apply gently.
- General Care
- Do not use any extreme chemicals.
- If not properly cared for your Shofar could , Split , Crack or scratch.
- Store in a cool dark place.
- Do not expose to direct sunlight or rain.
- A protective covering like a Shofar Bag is a good idea.
Shofar Safety
- Do not blow near babies.
- Do not blow near animals like Horses or Donkeys will spook them.
- With dogs hearing being 7 times more sensitive than ours also do not blow near them.
- Respect old people that would also get a fright.
- Also respect peoples hearing when blowing in close proximity.
- Be careful with the Bell ( Large open piece of the Shofar ) could have a rough edge, also could be easily damaged if dropped or bumped.
- If allowing others to blow your Shofar make sure you sanitize the mouthpiece regularly.
- Do not suck on the mouth piece could contain old saliva or Horn dust could cause a respiratory condition over time.
Sounding Your Shofar
- Point aperture / Bell to the heavens
- Blow utilizing the front or side of mouth
- Take note of angle of aperture /Bell that provides the best sound
- Relax lips
- Control acoustic with lips
- Form your lips around the rim
- Blowing your Shofar is an art not just simply blowing air through it
- Acoustic will either have a base or Treble sound, the large Kudu Shofars have more Base
